Dom Hoskins discusses how he discovered his passion for Jiu Jitsu

Hoskins in the midst of a take down

Dom Hoskins is no stranger to hard work. Hoskins has always been involved in sports as a kid growing up. During his first few years of college at FIDM he played football. However, he lost interest in playing because of the politics involved. One day a friend of Hoskins invited him to come to his Jiu Jitsu class.

After attending just one class "I loved the fact I could get back what I put into it I didn't have to worry about politics", Hoskins said in regards to his initial introduction to Jiu Jitsu some thirteen years ago. The whole team aspect really appealed to Hoskins. Also, working out on an individual appealed to Hoskins which is something that doesn't necessarily happen in football. Given Hoskins had spent a great amount of time playing football one might summarize he would return to the field one day soon. In Hoskins case that is not what happened "I turned in my pads the day after my first class and the rest was history", Hoskins said.

In 2012 Hoskins turned pro and turned his life around. He began to change his diet, life style habits, and training regiments. Hoskins has used his Jiu Jitsu platform to both teach and fight in Brazil and China for periods of time. He opened up his own Gym called dominant10n martial arts in July 2018 which is located in Walnut Creek, CA. Hoskins also started his own clothing line which is also called Dominat10n martial arts.

Hoskins thought once he turned pro in 2012 and made it to the world stage that sponsors would be calling him. Unfortunately, that was not the case for him. He had to go abroad to teach classes as well as fight to make a bigger name for himself. Once he gained notoriety and started winning more fights the sponsorships came. When Hoskins was asked does he enjoying fighting or teaching more? Here is his response "It's more rewarding being the teacher and fighting is just fun", Hoskins said.

In conclusion, Dom Hoskins quit football and turned to Jiu Jitsu to find his purpose in life. We all travel down different roads in life to get to where we want to be. Hoskins worked at Trader Joe's and didn't make a lot of money but he continued to train and fight because he knew he had bigger purpose in life. The moral to the story is be good to people, work hard, and be ready because you never know when your opportunity will come.
